Practical Things

Affordable Life-Changing Items

I cycle through two moods pretty frequently: some days I want to buy all the things for a fun dopamine hit and other days I want to use what I have and embrace the Marie Kondo lifestyle. This short list of items is for when I’m in the second mood. They’re practical, affordable and things I reach for again and again or repurchase often.

E.l.f. Power Grip Primer | Plastic Wine “Glasses” | Chomplings | Vase | Mesh Pouch(es)

Why I love each product:

E.l.f. Power Grip Primer
I have weird, textured, combo skin that NEVER takes face makeup (foundation, BB Cream, tinted moisturizer, tinted sunscreen, etc.) correctly. They all sit on top of my face highlighting every dry patch and microscopic bump on my face. This primer helps prevent that. I put it on and let it soak into my face while doing my eye makeup before adding my BB Cream (I love this stuff) on top. Somehow my skin looks even and natural. It’s magic.

Plastic Wine “Glasses”
Do I have kids? No. Do I drink wine by the pool? No. So why do I need plastic wine glasses? Because I wanted some everyday, not precious, glasses that I can use when company comes over for happy hour. The different colors help everyone remember which wine glass is theirs without have to detangle your collection of wine charms. And I just pop them in the dishwasher without having to worry if they’re going to bang around and break on a nearby piece of glassware. I didn’t think I would use these as much as I do, but they’re so easy and worry-free that I reach for them every time.

Chomplings
Not to be confused with the full-size Chomp sticks. As someone with major blood sugar issues (hello PCOS!), having an on-the-go snack is so imperative. These are the perfect size for even the smallest of purses, relatively filling, and low calorie. I like them better than sugary protein bars that I never feel like finishing in one go – and then have to worry about them melting in my purse. And I like Chomplings better than the full size Chomp Sticks because they don’t feel so. . . meat heavy. Plus, their name is cuter.

Vase
I know, I know. It’s a simple vase, but trust me, this one is superior! Why? Because it’s the PERFECT size for supermarket bouquets. How many times have you brought home flowers, plopped them in a vase only to have the spread out so much they look like little twigs fanning out around the opening? Flower arranging is an art and I don’t have the patience for it. The opening of this vase is small enough that one small-ish bouquet stays pretty close together – so it still looks like a cohesive bouquet in the vase. I usually buy some pink carnations, cut a few inches off the stems and, boom, elegant and minimalist flower arrangement!

Mesh Pouch(es)
These might feel a little ho-hum, but I can’t get enough of them. I’ve been using different size mesh pouches to organize my purses since high school – and that was a long time ago. The mesh material makes it easy to see what you have in each pouch, can stand up to being jostled around in your bag, and they can easily be shifted around when you’re searching the depths of your purse. Clothe and vinyl pouches just don’t have the same slide as a mesh pouch and more friction in a purse means more frustrated searches where you just end up dumping everything on the ground. I can’t explain it, but you don’t have to do that with these.
